About

About

A considerable quantity of music from the standard core repertoire has been performed, the choir occasionally joining forces with other groups to mount large-scale works. Notable concerts have included Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, Rachmaninov’s Vespers, Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony, Will Todd's Mass in Blue and Requiem settings by Brahms, Duruflé, Rutter and Verdi - this last with the Guildford–based choir Vivace Chorus singing in Guildford Cathedral.

In 2011 we teamed up again with Vivace Chorus plus the London Chorus and the London Symphony Chorus, backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mahler's 8th Symphony in the Royal Albert Hall. In April 2012 we joined forces with Southampton Philharmonic choir and the City of Southampton Orchestra in remembrance of those who lost their lives on RMS Titanic, performing Sea Symphony close to the dock where the White Star liner left one hundred years ago to the day.

The Society has also explored less familiar repertoire and has programmed works by a number of British composers that include Howard Blake (Benedictus), Brian Chapple (Magnificat), Bob Chilcott (Canticles of Light), Patrick Gowers (Viri Galilaei), Tarik O’Regan (Dorchester Canticles) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (Hodie). In 1996 the choir gave the British premiere of Max Bruch’s Christmas hymn Grüss an die Heilige Nachtwinning for the Society a Performing Right Society Enterprise award.

Romsey Choral Society can provide experienced singers for weddings, funerals or other special events that require a good quality choir. The standard provision of three hymns plus a suitable anthem would usually cost £400 but this figure can be adjusted both up and down depending upon your individual requirements.

The singers, drawn from the main body of the Choral Society, have wide experience of performing in churches in venues in the vicinity of Romsey, Southampton and Winchester and will be able to lead the singing of hymns, perform a psalm (such as Crimond), and sing at least one anthem or song if required. Whether the occasion is a wedding or a funeral, Romsey Choral Society will be able to give confident musical support.  Help and advice can be provided in choosing the most appropriate music to suit the occasion. Our regular accompanist is a professional organist who, if required could provide his own instrument. Our extensive contacts with professional singers enables us to offer, at a reasonable additional cost, the services of an excellent soloist.

One happy father of the bride wrote afterwards "People came to the wedding from all over England and from abroad and will take back memories of the beautiful music that you provided."
