Birthday Cake Candles

Whenever there is a Birthday celebration more often than not there is a Birthday Cake. Have you ever wondered why we have candles on a cake?

The tradition of placing candles on Birthday cake is attributed to early Greeks, who used place lit candles on cakes to make them glow like the moon. Greeks used to take the cake to the temple of Artemis-the Goddess of Moon. Some say that candles were placed on the cake because people believe that the smoke of the candle carried their wishes and prayers to Gods who lived in the skies. Others believe that the custom originated in Germany where people used to place a large candle in the centre of the cake to symbolize ‘the light of life’.

In present times too, people place candles on Birthday cakes and a silent wish is made before blowing out the candle. It is believed that blowing out all candles in one breath means the wish will come true and the person with enjoy good luck in the coming year. Some also smear out the name of the person before slicing of the cake to bring good luck.

In medieval times people of England used to place symbolic objects like coins, rings and thimbles in the batter of the cake. It was believed that those who found coin in the cake would be wealthy while the unlucky finder of the thimble would never marry. A Wedding was signified for the person who found the slice of cake with ring. Even today some people follow the tradition and place small figures, fake coins and small candies inside the cake.

Maypole dancing

The earliest Maypoles were part of a celebration of Summer which would be linked in with mystical things like tree worship and more basic things like an excuse for entertainment, dancing and having a good time.

They were probably just simple trees cut down and re-erected in the centre of a village green. We know that by the 16th and 17th centuries they were often very tall as we have paintings showing people dancing around them and the Puritans, who hated them, described in great detail what they were destroying, although the actual dances were not recorded.

After the Restoration many Maypoles were reinstated and a notable one was in the Strand. This was 134 foot high (41m) and stood there until Sir Isaac Newton used parts of it as a base for his telescope! Some of the maypoles from that period still survive in villages around the country. None of these maypoles had ribbons so the dances were probably any circular dances that were popular at the time.

The Maypole Dancing that people know today, happened because John Ruskin introduced it at Whitelands College in 1881 and created a series of dances and a May Pageant.

Generations of teachers learnt all about these and took them wherever they went on to teach and by the middle of the 20th century it had become a major tradition, much of which survives to the present day but for some years had been dying out as fewer teachers knew the dances.

Fortunately over the last few years Maypole Dancing has had a bit of a revival for all sorts of reasons to do with a greater awareness of our own culture and the sheer enjoyment by dancers and audience alike. The difference now is that there is a far greater degree of creativity with new dances and styles being invented all the time.

Music
In the early days the music would have been played on instruments like the Pipe & Tabor or the English Bagpipes and we can see these in those early paintings.

By the time John Ruskin came along the concertina or the fiddle would have been added and then later instruments would have included the accordion, flutes or any instruments that were loud enough to work in the open air. That still hold true but now often people dance to recorded music, whether recordings of country dance music and instruments like those mentioned or even pop songs and rap.

The Chinese Dragon

Just like the Chinese lion dance, the Chinese dragon dance dates back well over a thousand years. Rather than having just two performers, the Chinese dragon dance requires many performers to manipulate the serpentine body of the mythical creature, ideally making the dragon appear quick, powerful and mysterious. Although it may look easy, the dragon dance requires an exceptional level of acrobatic skill and a lot of practice with those involved training for many years in the craft.

Although the Chinese dragon dance is an ancient tradition, you’re far more likely to watch a Chinese lion dance this New Year simply because of the sheer space that a dragon dance requires. Performed by a troupe of circus acrobats who lift the dragon above their heads on poles, movements are carefully coordinated so as to appear seamless, which makes sense when you consider just how long the dragons can be. The shortest are generally 80 feet long, the average length is 100 feet and the world record lists a dragon that spanned 3 whole miles – that’s a lot of acrobats! The Chinese dragon tends to follow a pearl of wisdom – held by one of the performers – which it ‘chases’ through the streets of the procession.

In Chinese culture, odd numbers are associated with good luck and being conducive to success, so you’ll never see a Chinese dragon dance performed with 8, 10 or 12 acrobats! Teams of 9, 11, 13 and 15 performers are the most common and if you’re wondering what the dragon symbolises, it’s similar to the lion; the longer the creature is, the more prosperity and good fortune will be attracted.

A Chinese dragon dance is a rarer sight than a lion but just as entertaining. Some would argue that it is the pinnacle of Chinese New Year entertainment with fireworks which adorn its segmented body throwing off sparks during the dance. Performers in both the Chinese lion dance and Chinese dragon dance are often martial arts students due to the stamina required for a performance, but by no means is it a requirement and anyone wanting to learn can get involved. Be warned though: the training regime is extensive, intensive and exhausting with a highly demanding schedule.

The best ways to hire a band

Booking a band for any event can be tricky. What type of music, what size of band, and what price should you pay? 2. Make sure that the band you are after fits your event and music style perfectly. Therefore if you are a corporate event organiser ensure that your band have had vast experience playing at corporate gigs. Same goes for weddings, birthday parties, award ceremonies etc. So always research the band’s past clients and this will be able to give you an insight into the band’s history.

3. Always sign a contract, you must of heard dreaded horror stories of bands. Whether it is the band hasn’t showed up at all, the band has double booked or the band has got a flat tyre and can’t make it to your event. Well this is why you need to sign a contract; if any of these unfortunate circumstances happen then at least you have the right to get your money back. So always ask for a contract and make sure that it covers you under all circumstances.

4.You should look for testimonials on Facebook pages, the band’s own website and even on online forums. Also ask friends and family if they have heard of any good bands in the local area. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful sources so use it, it is free!

5. If you have an event and need to hire a band within a 30 mile radius. This means you are not paying extravagant amounts of money for extra travel and most entertainers will have the first 30 miles free. Some bands will even charge £2 a mile, after you already pay for your band I’m sure that £100 for travel alone will just not be worth it. So source out some great local bands that will play the exact music you like without the crazy travel costs!

Jay Sankey is one of the best Canadian magicians out there, whose tricks have been performed by all of the finest illusionists around the world including David Copperfield and David Blaine (to name just two). Although he sells a lot of his magic tricks to the community, he also has a fascinating YouTube channel that is well worth a look if you want to stun your mates with anything from cards right through to paperclips. In this fab little trick, he changes a coin into a note. Well worth learning!

Cups and Balls

A classic from many a Paul Daniels magic set, the Cups and Balls routine is a magic stalwart that you can get to learning with just a few basic props – a few cups and a few balls. Since they do an incredible magic performance and then tell us how it’s done, we thought we’d show you the cups and balls as performed by Penn and Teller. You’ll have to watch it through over and over again before you solve it, but that’s part of the fun. Magic!

Slop Card Trick

If you’re looking to learn magic, then YouTube is a great resource. There are many, many magicians and performers willing to take you through learning a magic trick or two and although the tutorial qualities vary, some really do seem to go the extra mile. Before trying a card trick, we highly recommend investing in a pack of Blue or Red Bicycle cards as it certainly makes the performance that bit easier.
